Rotary Community Hall

rot-photo2.jpg (270493 bytes)

The Rotary Club till a couple of years back functioned from a small building and prior to that from a rented building. It was our dream to build a community hall that would also house our meeting place. A plot of land was purchased near the natonal highway and the foundation stone for an ambitious project- an indoor shuttle cum community hall was laid. However there were impediments. Paucity of funds had put a brake to the construction. However we clung to our dreams with tenacity and on 8th July 2000 our long cherished aspirations were crowned with success when the the massive Hall was inaugurated during the Presidentship of Dr. C. Antony. The Community hall can be utilised by the people of Sherthallai to conduct cultural events, weddings, seminars etc. There is an indoor badminton court and a chamber to conduct the club meetings.

Marine Laboratory

A Marine laboratory with state-of-the-art equipment is functioning at the Government Vocational Higher Secondary School, Arthunkal under the WCS project co-sponsored by the Rotary Club of Singapore. This project was inaugurated by the then Dist. Governor Dr. M.R.R.Menon in 1997, Rtn. V.K. Joy was the President.Arthunkal lies in the coastal belt of Sherthallai where a large fishing community eke a hand to mouth existence. However education, which is free upto the 10th class, is high on the priorities of the fisher folk who would like the next generation to reap the benefits of the same. The Rotary club of Sherthallai thought it befitting to commission a Marine laboratory for the under privileged folks who live off the sea. It is heartening to note how well appreciated this project is.

Rotary Working Women's Hostel

With the advent of the rail line, presence of several educational institutions, hospitals and various industries there soon emerged a sizable number of women joining the work force in Sherthallai. A working women's hostel was considered imperative and the need of the hour. The Rotary Working Women's Hostel was the brain child of one of our illustrious past Presidents- Dr. V.V.Pyarelal, who with the active co-operation of a committed team of loyal Rotarians brought this establishment to existence within a period of 18 months, with the financial assistance from the Government of India(1984). This establishment provides boarding and lodging to 50 odd working women at a comparitively reasonable price. Ideally located at a central place and efficiently managed with a touch of Rotary, this place today is the much sought Hostel of the town by the working women. The sign board placed in front of the hostel on the side of the National Highway and the edifice itself speaks volumes to the passer by about the Rotary movement in Sherthallai. In fact this is the only working womens' hostel in our Rotary District.
